As the EVs flock to roads, so does the demand for their charging stations. Businesses can now capitalize on this trend and attract customers by installing EV charging locations. To begin doing this, it’s essential to understand the different levels of EV charging.

There are three EV charging types: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Regarding speed, the slowest is Level 1, and the fastest is Level 3. The right type of charger will depend on what you want out of your business plan and what kind of station you want to install.

This blog will clarify the differences betweenEV charging levels to make an informed choice for your business.

Three Levels Of Charging Stations

EV charging levels vary in power, speed and types of EV chargers, depending on whether Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3. Level 3 is divided into DC Fast Charging and (Tesla) Supercharging.

An EV’s charge time will depend on the power it can receive from its EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment). This charger influences how long it takes to use each level of charge.

Regardless, higher levels allow the battery to be filled with power faster than lower levels, meaning users benefit from a quicker recharge when using higher levels of EV charging.

Level 1: 120-Volt

Level 1 electric vehicle charging connects the charger to a regular household 120-volt wall outlet that offers 1 kW to 1.8 kW power. This kind of charging costs more and charges slowly, which makes it not that much efficient. This charging method is slow, as it adds between 2 and 4 miles of range per hour.

Generally, this type of charging is most suitable for plug-in hybrid vehicles due to their smaller batteries, while those with bigger batteries may find that level 2 charging better suits their daily needs. Level 1 chargers can be used in residential spaces.

Level 2: 208V – 240V

Level 2 EV charger is the most popular level of EV charging and can be easily installed in homes, workplaces, and public locations like shopping plazas and train stations. Level 2 charging uses a 240-volt power outlet and operates three to 4 times better than level 1 charging. This type of charging can put out between 6.0 kW and 19.2 kW, which is the fastest for this level.

Depending on the power output and a vehicle’s maximum charge rate, Level 2 charging can replenish between 12 to 80 miles of range per hour – up to 10 times faster than Level 1.

Level 3 Charging: 400 V – 900 V (DC Fast Charge & Supercharging)

Level 3 charger is the most advanced type available today. These chargers utilize direct current, providing up to 20 miles of range per minute. The level 3 chargers can put out 50 kW to 350 kW power and require higher voltage. This kind of charger needs much more power than Level 1 or Level 2 chargers and they’re not intended to be installed at home.

Level 3 chargers are also differentiated by their connector types, and there are three primary standards: Combined Charging System (Combo), CHAdeMO, and Tesla’s Supercharger network. Level 3 charging station is usually found in public locations for easy access and convenient recharging.

Application Of Different EV Charging Levels In Industries

The type of vehicles used, work shift lengths, and mileage traveled all impact EV charging requirements for each sector’s specific circumstances. Installing charging solutions according to the industry needs is one of the crucial things to be considered.

3.1 Residential Charging

For most residential EV owners, Level 1 charging is the ideal option. It’s great for topping up your battery after a day of driving or overnight charging. In contrast, Level 2 charging can provide faster rates if you need to set your car quickly – such as before a long road trip.

3.2 Commercial Parking Charging

Level 3 EV charging stations can charge an electric vehicle much faster than a Level 2 station, making them the preferred option for high-traffic commercial parking lots. These advanced units also offer a higher power output, likely required for larger electric vehicles with bigger batteries.

3.3 Workplace Charging

When it comes to workplace charging, level 2 EV charging is the best option for most businesses. Level 2 chargers are much faster than level 1 chargers, meaning employees can charge their vehicles in less time. Additionally, level 2 charger is more affordable than level 3 charger, making them a more budget-friendly option for businesses.

3.4 Hospitality Charging

For hotels looking to maximize their revenue potential and offer the highest quality services to their visitors, obtaining a combination of Level 2 and Level 3 chargers is likely the most effective choice. This will enable guests to access dependable charging options for their electric vehicles in a timely and convenient manner.
